CHALLENGE:
Design a T-Shirt for the 2007 Martial Art Camp (SummerFest 2007).
The theme is: "All is in Uechi-Ryu".
The design should reinforce the idea that the traditional style 'Uechi-Ryu' karate system shares elements of the popular UFC and mixed martial arts although it's not always immediately apparent (even for some of the teachers).

Enter the sketchbook—begin process of drawing imagery that draws from the vernacular of the style, the animals representing important aspects of the fighting style: tiger, dragon and crane.
My concept is a combination of type and imagery, actually listing out both the inherent and less obvious elements of the style and then wrapping them inside the representative framework of the style (animals). The images from the sketchbook below illustrate the initial efforts to "see" how the elements work best…
